Beauty speaks for itself, doesn’t it? Here I share images of things I find inspiring. (My earlier posts were more wordy than they are now, so if you prefer that sort of thing check out my main blog, Fizgiggery.)

Meet: Metalsmith Mark Kaplan

by f.lauren.a on March 26, 2012

Sometimes you come across a design aesthetic so original and beautiful it makes you pause.   While spelunking on Etsy today I came across Mark Kaplan’s shop.  Mark’s profile says he earned his first boy scout merit badge in metalsmithing a long time ago.  I say, how lucky are we to have such a selection of jewellery that is kinetic, humourous, and elegant!

Here are some earrings inspired by that most creative of geniuses Alexander Calder:

Aren’t they wonderful?  I love how they balance, like a mobile… I love the shape, which reminds me of a rib cage… or deer antlers… or the strange and beautiful wind sculptures I saw in Santa Fe’s gardens last year.

It seems much of Mark’s lovely work is inspired by nature. Look at this fab bracelet, which is like a strand of DNA, or berries along a branch:

Living in as many places as I have, I always enjoy seeing art forms that were inspired by the artist’s travels.  Here’s a pair of earrings inspired by Indian prayer flags:

Best of all, Mark uses only recycled materials in his pieces.  I have to say, this Hanging Chad necklace made me laugh.  Then think very seriously — I became a U.S. citizen in 2009, so this November will be the first time I’m able to vote in a presidential election!

You can buy Mark’s wonderful creations at his Etsy store. Check out more of his work on his Facebook and Flickr.

How to Make a Rainbow

May 9, 2011 ❤ Lauren
Thumbnail image for How to Make a Rainbow

I remember my first rainbow. I must have been about 3 years old, and we were living in London. My dad bent down from his great height to pick me up, up, up in the air, and carried me to a little window at the back of the kitchen. Look there! he said, pointing at [...]

California Dreamin’

February 8, 2011 ❤ Lauren

I have big news.  I’m moving to Los Angeles in April!  It’s something my husband and I have been thinking about for a while, and we’ve decided to go for it. After a particularly brutal winter, I must say I’m looking forward to lots of sunshine! Will I miss the seasons? Sure… eventually. But then [...]

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star…

February 2, 2011 ❤ Lauren

… how I wonder what you are… Did you know that the melody to this nursery rhyme was actually composed by Mozart? And have you ever noticed how it’s the same little tune as “A B C D E F Geeeeee”? Nursery rhymes and lullabies are something most people around the world grow up with. [...]

Dare to Dream

January 25, 2011 ❤ Lauren

I enjoy dreaming. It’s not a lazy past-time – it helps me figure out what my priorities are, and what I want from life. For example, with all this Arctic weather here in NYC (wind chill factor of -5˚F / -20˚C!) this past week, I’ve been dreaming of living in a warmer climate, and preferably [...]

The Power of Positive Thinking

January 23, 2011 ❤ Lauren

I’ll admit that 2011 got off to a bad start. Between the extra-cold Arctic weather, the news that a dear friend of mine was moving to the other side of the country at short notice, and all of Life’s Other Challenges, I was feeling a little blue. So, the other night, I poured myself a [...]

I Resolve to Be More Creative…

January 5, 2011 ❤ Lauren

With the beginning of every new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start.  It may be purely psychological, but it doesn’t matter.  It’s the opportunity to not only mull over the journey so far, but to perhaps adjust the route. So my resolution for 2011 is to be more creative.  I want to take [...]
